Speaking practice: Shopping for food & Eating Out

Get ready for speaking:

  1. Choose your level (A2, B1, B2/B2+) and look at the questions

  2. ​Choose one or more questions and prepare your answers. 

A2
Elementary

What kind of food shops do you have where you live?

How often do you / does your family do the food shopping?

Where do you go out to eat with your friends / family? Why?

When you go out what's your favourite meal? Why?

B1
Intermediate

Where do people where you live usually do their food shopping?

What are the advantages of shopping for food in a local market?

When did you last eat out with your family? Was it a special occasion?

Why do you think some people like to eat out in very expensive restaurants?

B2/B2+
U.Intermediate /+

Where do your family tend to do their food shopping?

What are the pros and cons of doing your food shopping online?

Is eating out in restaurants regularly part of your culture or do you only do it on special occasions? Why?

What advice would you give to a visitor to your country about eating out? 

How can you prepare your answers?

  • Write down key vocabulary using a) verb + noun, or b) adjective + noun or c) verb + adjective + noun. You can use a dictionary to translate vocabulary you don't know in English. 

For example: a) go shopping, go to the market, celebrate a birthday, eat fast food, b) delicious food, special occasion​, c) eat delicious food

  • Practise answering the question(s) using the vocabulary
     

   3. Are you ready? Now record your answer(s) to the questions.

       You can use your phone or online voice recorders such as:

   Record your answer several times and listen to yourself.

   When you're happy share your recording with a friend / study

   buddy to get some feedback.

  • What was good? How can you improve it?

   4. Wait 2/3 days and record your answers again. This will help

   you to be more fluent.
